Cultural changes is how a individual or a community has an influence on there behaviour.
In soaps sub cultures are used to represent Multicultral society ,
Sub Cultures include : ethnicity such as muslim, christianity ,Sexuality such as homosexual and Politicssuch as right wing left wing, fashion . Emo ,Dark culture ,Grunger,
Hip-hop Rave ,Rude boy, Skater ,
How has British culture changed in
the last quarter of a century?
Culture has changed a lot
over a long period of time such as in soaps there are issues that maybe was
thought as not acceptable such as people having relationships living together
but not married. Sexuality is more open and acceptable now, such as in
coronation street in the 80’s they wouldn’t agree with homosexuality and
including in the storylines, or even talk about it . However now a day’s as a
society we are much more open, and included in soaps and in storylines. Cultural changes has also changed a lot in the
newspapers , and magazines , there are more news about celebrities and people
can write in to newspapers and say their personal issues or stories .
If Britain is now a multi-cultural
society, do we see evidence of this in British soap operas?
Yes we see evidence such as
different religions, age , genders and sub groups showing there 'issues' in the
storylines .
Do minority cultures feel as
represented in soaps as majority cultures?
Minority cultures may feel less involved in soaps if they are not involved
as much as a majority of cultures.
The storylines make the audience feel more involved with the soap and that
people can relate if they are going through the same issue.
What impact has the development of
other sub-cultures (youth culture etc.) had on British
soap operas?
Having impact of development with
other sub cultures involved this has made soaps more and more popular because
it involved a wider demographic of different ages , genders , religions etc .
What other cultural changes have also had an impact on British soap operas?
Other cultural changes could have
an impact on British soap operas such as storylines , giving main storylines to
a different range of cultures , religions , ethnic groups etc . such as in
Eastenders , the soap appeals to a wide audience so they include a variety of
people in the soap to try and relate .
British cultural identity was represented/ reflected in soaps in previous eras by making the characters sterotypical to the audience, by the apperance and the characteristics of the characters being portrade.
This picture shows the cast of Coronation street in the 60's, this picture identifies the Britishness culture that was represented during this time period. From the picture there isn't any other cultures being represented or portrade within the soap. In comparrioson to nowadays all types of ethnicity and cultures are represented to connect with more people and to make the audience feel more involved. Corontaion street was mainly a white cast, as Britain wasn't much of a multi-cultural country, however nowadays it's becoming more, which appeals to a wider audience and shows the cultural changes that have been made over time. (white British)
This picture in contrast with the picture above shows a cultural change within the soap characters, the cast growing into the modern age has developed over the years, furthermore other cultures and storylines are being represented within soaps nowadays then in the 60's. In the picture it shows a more ethnic cast and represents different cultures, also a lot more variety of ages and a more even amount of gender split is being represented as in the 60's episodes the gender was mainly woman being represented and the cast was a more older age range, however in episodes nowadays children, teenagers, adults, elderly people are being represented. In storyline issues with different types of cultures are being represented within soaps and other types of media sources and other issues such as different sexualities and beliefs are being represented as these issues are becoming more accepted in comparison to the 60's where different sexuality, cultural & ethnicity wasn't portrayed.
In modern episodes there are many different cultures being represented through soaps such as Coronation street, in comparison to the old episodes, as there wasn't many cultures back then, as coronation street is more multi-cultural by the characters portraid this more realistic and connects to its wider demographic audience. The soap also attracts a more younger viewing audience as there is a cast of a younger audience within the show, which portaits people peoples lives with a variety of characters.

In newer episodes people's sexualities is more open as more soap characters are given a homosexual role, as this seemed to become more expecting within the world. These soap stoyline representing different kinds of people appeal to a much more wider audience.

Economic reason - ( in print )
A newspaper typically generates 70–80% of its revenue from advertising, and the remainder from sales and subscriptions. The portion of the newspaper that is not advertising is called editorial content, or editorial, although this is refered specifically to those articles in which the newspaper and its guest writers express their opinions. (This distinction, however, developed over time – early publishers like Girardin (France) and Zang (Austria) did not always distinguish paid items from editorial content.)
The business model of having advertising subsidize the cost of printing and distributing newspapers (and, it is always hoped, the making of a profit) rather than having subscribers cover the full cost was first done, it seems, in 1833 by The Sun, a daily paper that was published in New York City. Rather than charging 6 cents per copy, the price of a typical New York daily at the time, they charged 1-cent, and depended on advertising to make up the difference.

Electronic paper . e-paper and electronic ink are display technologies which are designed to mimic the appearance of the ordinary ink on paper. Unlike conventional backlit flat panel displays which emit light , electronic paper displays reflect light like ordinary paper . Many of the technologies can hold sttic text and images indefitienly without using electricity , while allowing images to be charged later. Flexible electronic paper uses plastics substrates and plastic electronics for the display backplane .

Electronic print:
Printing electronics is a set of printing methods used to create electrical devices on various substrates. printing uses low cost equipment suitable for defining patterns on materials such as screen printing, flexography, gravure, offset lithography and inkjet.
Offset Printing:

Offset printing is a commonly used printing technique , the ink image is transferred from a plate to a rubber blanket then to the printing surface.
When used in combination with the lithographic process, which is based on the repulsion of oil and water, the offset technique employs a flat (planographic) image carrier on which the image to be printed obtains ink from ink rollers, while the non-printing area attracts a water-based film (called "fountain solution"), keeping the non-printing areas ink-free.
Development of the offset press came in two versions: In 1875 by Robert Barclay of England for printing on tin, and in 1903 by Ira Washington Rubel of the United States for printing on paper.
Lithography was initially created to be an inexpensive method of reproducing artwork. This printing process was limited to use on flat, porous surfaces because the printing plates were produced from limestone. In fact, the word 'lithograph' historically means "an image from stone." Tin cans were popular packaging materials in the 19th century, but transfer technologies were required before the lithographic process could be used to print on the tin.
The first rotary offset lithographic printing press was created in England and patented in 1875 by Robert Barclay. This development combined mid-19th century transfer printing technologies and Richard March Hoe’s 1843 rotary printing press—a press that used a metal cylinder instead of a flat stone. The offset cylinder was covered with specially treated .

Rolling Print Press (Rotary Printing Press):
A rotary printing press is a printing press in which the images to be printed are curved around a cylinder. Printing can be done on large number of substrates, including paper, cardboard, and plastic. Substrates can be sheet feed or unwound on a continuous roll through the press to be printed and further modified if required (e.g. die cut, overprint varnished, embossed).
Nowadays technology has changed and people tend to read articles online , each papers have there own wesites such as :

Newspaper articles online are becoming more popular, newspaper websites are providing to be effiecent to produce and easier for their audience to view. This has the same effect as a newspaper based, however electronic papers has become more easier to use as people are using electronic devices such as smartphones and tablets to access the news, which appeals to peoples needs and lifestyles.
Audience needs & lifestyles

This screen shot shows that you can look up weather , travel , environment , videos . By watching videos online this makes the viewing feel more engaged and by interacting with the news feel more involved . From this imagery this will appeal to a young female demographic. By the black and white colour this stands out and create a clean a smart look.
Audience Needs & Lifestyles in soap
This screen shot shows the latest episode of E20. The appearance of the webpage is black and red with white text, this has a edgy and a urban look, this fits the audience needs and lifestyle and the webpage is trying to appeal to the demographic audience by creating a cool look. There are links at the top of the page which you can access more episodes and find out more about the characters. Also on the page are links to social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook, this also fits the audience needs and lifestyles as social networking sites is a way of connecting with friends and family, by doing this it gives you the latests news and updates of E20, and young people will see this on there phone and laptop, this affects there lifestyle as the media are becoming more accessible through other devices. Cultural changes is how a individual or a community has an influence on there behaviour.
What other cultural changes have also had an impact on British soap operas?

The other
character "Fatboy" may be typically stereotyped / scene as "rude
boy" by the hoodie and the way he is leaning against a wall , which could
connote his 'coolness' .
British cultural identity was represented/ reflected in soaps in previous eras by making the characters sterotypical to the audience, by the apperance and the characteristics of the characters being portrade.
From this image we start to make judgments on the representation of the character and how she has been portrated within the shot. From this image the character (Ena Sharples) looks like shes interfaring with a vicious nature and expression of her face. From the shot she is holding a glass and in the corner is the top of a beer bottle which could suggests shes an alchoholic or likes to drink. She looks like a working character, with the hairnet on her head we asume that she works in catering. In this time period it mainly focuses on a white cast and storylines such as homosexuality isn't explored.

In soaps in the 60's there wasn't any technology represented within the soaps through cultural change, however in soaps nowadays technology is becoming a cultural change through the contact of cast characters who are living from other parts of the world and people mixing with other cultures. E.g. in the soap Eastenders the Masood family are from Pakistan and they are being represented with there own storylines which identifies there culture. The technology that they use are phones, to contact there other family members who are not seen in the soap but are mentioned, other technology which is being represented is computers, radios which also shows the cultural in changes and the audience needs and lifestyles. Also in Eastenders the character 'Dot Branning' is represented with her Christianity beliefs which reaches out to a wider demographic audience and also represents different religions and beliefs with her scripting dialog from quotes from the bible which identifies her religion, in comparison to soaps in the 60's there wasn't any storylines broadcasted within different religion of cultural believes.
Coronation street from the 1960's:
From this era of Coronation street women are being the mian gender who are represented, as the audience who was mainly woman. In the clip the culture being represented is white British. In the opening children are being represented who are aslo female, from the casting it shows that it was mainly a female population/ domonance with the power and the gossiping storylines. Working class women are being represented as she has her own business/ shop - talking about the business, man not working, family orentated, round a table eating shows the closeness of the family. In another scene mother bickers with her son whos a adult in order to find a job, different family lives are lifestyles are being represented stealing money from his mums purse shows/ represents good and bad behaviour/ been in prison- so he hasn't been given a job. Father of family round the table treats his son like a child when his a grown man, about meeting a girl, typical father figure being protective over his children; however if this was todays times the father would be more protective over his daughter rather than their sons. The brother walks in- the mood changes from the dad his happier after knowing his son is getting a motor bike, which he then goes to look at whilst the mother is doing dinner for the son that's just walked in, the brothers start talking about that the farther isn't happy about him meeting this girl. This shows a family orentated enviroment even though the characters in the scene have become slighly fragmented but not totally as they are doing there own thing. From this clip they have British accents which identifies there British culture and the language has changed comapred to nowadays, such as they use old English terms such as 'bob' for money. The Young children at the begging of the programme are bouncing a ball, the culture change compared to now is that technology would be involved, you wouldn't necessarily see young girls play with balls whilst singing a rythming song as this may seem to become a more male thing to do/ playing with a bouncing ball/ culture changes has changed as it wouldn't be that common now. The northen accents identify the Britishness, tea pot & tea set also shows the Britishness. The mother seems exited that her son is meeting a girl, after dad makes points he stands up, this action could be to connote his importance and that he is more powerful/ domonace/ in control of his children.

This is a link for a episode of Coronation street from 2013. The culture changes in this episode has chnage in camparison to the first link, in the opening scene it is introducing a family setting in their home, living day to day life such as child going to school, then we are introduced to another family setting around the table eating breakfast, in contrast with the episode from the 90's, there are a more varity of people being represented with the episode such as mix gender, age range, the storylines are more broadern in comparrison to the 90's episode. A family orentated settings/storyline are being portrade e.g. the relationship between character roles such as mums & their sons and father and his daughter, this could be due to the demographic audience of Coronation street, that it's a family viewing programme, and they are trying to connect with the viewers by trying to connect with them, by the family settings. Technology is used such as phones and computers which shows the cultral change of development and also identifies the time period. The mother cleaning at the begging which could identify a house wife which shows the job role of being a mother and a day to day life which people can relate to.
From these points this shows that soaps have become a multi-cultural show that appeals to a wider demographic and also represents Britain in a broadern way by the issues of the character that are being represented.
From these points this shows that soaps have become a multi-cultural show that appeals to a wider demographic and also represents Britain in a broadern way by the issues of the character that are being represented.

"The guardian is high-qulaity product and we believe this is the right - price point for our newspaper at this time." The price increased happen in 2011 saturday 17th september .
Also the price might have gone up in price maybe because not a lot of people by it as much , because if one person buys in in the family , everybody can read that copy more than once , instead of buying 2 or 3 versions of the same newspaper. Also the price costs more to make / to print & to get across to all different countries.

The prices for the "Guardian" will have a impact of circulation on how many people will buy it compared the the "Independents" . The Guardian offers more % saving deals , but the independents newspaper is cheaper per week 7 days.
The role of advertisment -
The guardian (electronic) - did not use advertising , however now it does , the online independent uses advertisment to generate revenew telegraph religious subsciptions .
How the price of papers have changed
Industral revolution - By the early 19th century many cities in Europe as well as North and South America. Advances in printing technology related to the inustrial revolution enabled newspapers to become an even more widely circulated means of communication, in 1814, The Times (London) acquired a printing press capable of making 1,100 impressions per minute. The innovation made newspapers cheaper after they printed both sides of a page and penny press papers cost about one sixth of the price of other newspapers and appeals to a wider audience.

The benefits for readers to read online rather than a paper copy is that people can read all over the world, on there iPads, phones, laptops etc. Other positives about subscripting online is that papers may offer you deals/ free vouchers for example the Daily Telegraph :
This screen shot above identifies that the newspaper is trying to persuaded customers / readers to subscript to there website as by offering free cinema tickets, 15% off at Robert Dyas, two for one dining out at more than 2,000 restaurants etc. By using theses customer techniques online papers are getting more and more readers. Another positive factor about online papers is that its quick and easy to find out about the local/ national news within seconds, online articles give you quick updates. On the other hand there may be some disadvantages for subscribing online such as it may be expensive in the long term. Another disadvantage of this could be that there may be a contact within the terms and conditions policy which may lead to the reader who no longer wants to get online papers anymore may still have to pay as they have signed up for a certain amount of time. Online papers may have to watch out for there competitors as they may offer better deals and services which may lead to a larger market. Theses factors show identifies the economic reasons in print and that the pricing of papers has changed over time and how the changes of papers themselves causes prices to change.

Advances in technology
Coronation Street sets: 1960 - 1980 the set of corronation street was built inside one of Granada Studios . The set was really small and awkward for the actors . Until 1967 that editing techniques had improved enough to allow corronation strret to be filmed on seperate interior and exterior sets. The pavements and cobbled streets were painted on the studio floor. The only only real change seen on screen was natural ligh illuminating the streets for the first time . In late 1968 was constructed brick, with rocks and back yards.
1982- New sets was built , the set was updated in late 1989. Between 1989-1999 they allowed members of the public to visit the set.
Broadcasting
Between 9th December -1900 and 3rd march 1961 , corronation street was broadcasted twice a week (wednesday & friday). The friday episodes was broadcasted live, with wednesday episode being pre-recorded 15 minuites later ; the reason being they had to wait for the tape to develop. The series were in black & white for most of the 60s . The reasons why episodes were produced in colour for monochrome transmission was to test the look of costumes and sets, using new cameras. .

It also give opportunities to actors and writers living outside the southeast.

Economic reason
Episodes are not shown live due to low budgets becuase post production work was impossible when it was . Soap operas have cheap production costs compared to films , for example pirates of the carribean , Dead Man's Chest and its sequel Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End were produced together on a combined budget of $450 million ; which made them the most expensive production . soap operas last year had spent 29.8 million pounds for last years live episodes. This is cheap compared to the example of Pirates of the Caribbean , so soaps are unable to create more of an affects such as stunts or new equipment for the sets . Eastenders has been forced to reduce the number of actors with speaking parts to 16 per episode, to keep with in the budget , "its a bid to save costs" . In March , Mr Thompson warned staff he had to make a further 400 million pounds of cuts over 3 years to balance the corporation books . Samantha Womack , who plays Ronnie Mitchell , had signed a 2 year contract with the BBC is worth 450,000 pounds making her one of the highest paid soap stars . The BBC spent 102.5 million last year on six tv soaps including EastEnders , Casualty , Holby City and Doctors (BBC soap opera) - a 20% drop overall in real terms in the past 8 years . Eastenders recieved an extra 500,000 on top of its 29.8 million pounds annual budget for last years live episodes to mark the 25th anniversary show. In the end episode cost 696,000 pounds .
The BBC spent almost 700,000 pounds on its anniversary half hour live episode of Eastenders ; corporation bosses gave an extra half a million pounds , over normal costs - to fund the BBC 25th anniversary . Eastenders spent nearly 7 million on costs this year .
Dramas included Casulty and Eastenders has reduced by 1/5 over the past 8 years . However for the 6 programmes had risen by almost 9% .
Coronation street casts are getting pay cuts . The sun says "The corrie cast recieved letters just before christmas saying the saturday Omnibus (UK TV series) would move from ITV1 to ITV2 " .
The cast members are currently paid 37.5% of their episode , but actors would be forced to share a small Royalty fee instead . Due to the recession .

Eastenders ratings :
Eastenders Episodes attract a total audience share between 35 & 40 % . The repeat showing on BBC Three attract an average of 500,000 viewers , whilst the sunday omnibus attract around 3million . Eastenders is one of more popular programmes on British Television & regulary attracts beween 7 - 12 million viewers. (30.15 million viewers watched Den Watts serve Angie divorce papers, christmas in (1986) . Eastenders 2 main riveals are Coronation Street and Emmerdale . In 2001 Eastenders clashed with Coronation Street for the 1st time . Eastenders won the battle with 8.4 million viewers (41% share ) whilst Coronation Street lagged behined with 7.3 million viewers (34%) . The live 25th anniversary show (February 2010) , with Stacey Branning as Archie Mitchells killer story line recieved 16.41 million viewers , the shows highest rating since 14th November 2003 .

Coronation Street viewing Figures-
Most episodes in the 1960s,70s & 80s rated with over 20million views . 1987 christmas day an average 28.5 million viwers tuned to see "Hilda Agden" leave the street . Since Eastenders began in 1985 , the two programmes have constantly battled it out for the 1st place in ratings
The budget of soaps
Has the budget of soaps changed over time?
The visual quality of soap operas are lower than prime time US television dramas due to the lower budget and quicker production times. In 2009 speaking parts were ;limited for Eastenders due to budget cuts, with an average of 16 characters per episode.
BBC soap budget:
The NAO analysis shows the corporation of £102.5 million was spent between 2009-2010 on dramas such as Casualty, Doctors, Eastenders, Holby city, Rivercity (Scotland) & Pobol y cam (Wales, s4c). It is spending less and making more hours than in 2002-2003 when £108.6 million was spent. The NAO also say that costs were controlled tightly, but the audience has increased by an average of 6.5% over the last 4 years. Holby city spent the highest % of their budget of £18.6million on cast (27%), scripts and stories (13%).

This table shows the budget for the soaps and the years for the budget cost from 2002-2010. In this chart the soap/ drama that has the highest budget is Eastenders this could be because of the popularity of the soap and it has a wider audience range e.g. in comparison to Pobol y Cmw which is a Welsh show. This table shows that budgeting costs has gone down over the years.
Changes in content , style & culture

This is a old picture of the sun , compared to the more modern version, this paper has no colour ; there is simple black and white text with a bold headline 'GOTCHA'. This grabs the viewers attention and could persuade them to read on . On this newspaper there is only one storyline on the front page , where as if you compared to the modern paper (below) there is little informantion such as the England match and the manager, Myleene class and cheryle cole with advertisemnt of a free flag in the midddle (celebrities and free give aways to pershade you to buy the paper) . This newspaper shows a patrotic society - the headline 'our lads' shows that the paper is being represented as that it is proud of our country. The hierarchy based on establishment and shows clear class desitions of the working class of the soliders , however in the newever version of the sun is all about celebritites and their lifestyles. This paper is cheaper compared to the morden paper this could be due to that the paper is printed in black and white and the new paper has coloured ink. Another reason why this paper may be cheaper is because it was more popular at that time everybody brought the paper for the latest news rather than relying on technology. The content of this paper has more text compared to the more moreden verison which is based up of pictures.
The newer paper of the sun is eye catching and much more appealing compared to the first front cover (shown above) as this newspaper is more visual by the images which makes it more appealing to the demograpahic audience. In this sun there is a a 'FREE GIANT FLAG', this could persuaded the viewer to buy the paper and it is in capital letters which also grabs the viewers attention. The reason being why this newer version of this paper is different may be because peoples needs and their lifestyles has changed and the society e.g. in this paper the front page is all about celebritites where as the older paper above, is about real life . The demographic has become a more mainstream audience and the paper has to appeal to a range of ages , by putting celebrities on the front page we feel more invloved with there lives and a way of getting quick celebrity gossip. This paper has become a much more mass paper due to the quick information. The graphics on this paper is take up most of the page.
In result when comparing both of these papers they both have short and catchy headlines which grabs your attention , in bold letters.

This is a old copy of the 'Daily Express', you can tell this paper is alot older comapred to the much more mordern version (below) , this paper is written like a script / posh text of the paper title (name) ' Daily Express', the text is simple and there is no colour. This doesn't make the paper look eye catching when you compare it to the newer version of newspapers. From the article 'HILTER TRIES TO SCARE US' , 'One must die : Britain or Germany shows that there is a war going on between both countries . From looking at this paper it shows true Britishness such as : from the logo , there is is a knight with and sword and a English cross on it. The script handwritting of 'Daily Express' shows the poshness of the paper and could show the target audience of upperclass . This paper would proably attract a smaller demographic audience and had very little leadership, woman may buy this paper to see if there husbands are safe and okay, and men may buy this paper to read more info about the war that going on.
From this copy this is much more mordern and this is alot more clearer compared to the first picture , this copy has colour unlike the one above which make it more eye catching and appealing to the consumer. There is advertisement of the paper 'FREE' in yellow text and in capital letters which is to to grab your attention which is to get a free theme park entry. This may appeal to a family orrentated audience as a day out to a theme park. In compaisson to the first paper , this paper still remains to contain some Britishness like the first paper such as the logo is still the same however it is in red which could symbolize the red as 'royal' , however the writting isnt as posh compared to the paper above which loses its Britishness script written, which identifies the morden era and also appeals to a wider demographic. The graphics are taking up more page space on this newer version. The layout and the page design include more content . The fonts are slightly different in the articles , the headline of the article 'Britain wants Charles as king' takes up a lot of space on the front page , in comparison to the old daily express there is more text . As this paper is 5p this may appeal to people who are busy such as business people who want to have a quick read of the news.
Changes in content
Changes in content

This picture is of the times from 1950
This picture is of the Times that was published in 2011.
The changes in content from the times 1950 paper is that it contains more religious statements such as priest, lord etc. The photography of this paper establishes a meeting with the men in the suits which identifies the story of the 'Mr Thompson to peruse talks with allies'. This became the 1st photographed to appear on a front cover. There are more news stories which are split into columns, set out in a box structure rather than one main story in comparison to the modern version which is of a British photographer who died, with a picture taking up most of the page. Other news in a column going down the page are of civilians who have been hit in cluster bomb attack. On the more modern version is a tiny box at the bottom of the page is 'Wenger' the arsenal manager which shows content about sport which is not visible on the front page of the older version. Also on the more modern version of The Times at the top of the page in a purple background is white writing of Kate- princess who is married to William which shows content of royal news which wasn't established in the older version of The Times.
Newspapers in the 80's wouldn't have news about celebrities as much as nowadays however comapred to this era there are news about celebrities in every media source such as radio, tv, newspapers, magazine etc. From the 1788 paper the news around this time period would probably include news such as the army and content about countries. However in comparrison to nowadays there will be news about celebries, sport, local news depending on the paper e.g. Gurdian such as local events or local boy shot etc. In this time period more people are being represented within the news such as sexulaity, ethnecity, age, gender etc. In contrast to the 60's where only certain people were being represented / a group of people such as the army. This paper contains photos of kate as she is going to be a Royal bride to William, as a society papers are contributing news about the royal family and celebrities as we are becoming more interested in their lives.
Daily Mail Silver Jubilee Issue, 1935
Daily Mail front page in August 2010.
The Daily Mail published news inter the war period and post war history such as in 1946, celeberating its golden jubilee, Winston Churchhill was the chief guest, 1924 publsished the foged Zinoview letter, which indicated that British communites were planning violent revolution.
From these two papers, the paper that was publsihed in 1935 has a more politcal and royal story with the queen and the king, however with the 2010 version it is more about real life peole. The newer version contains colour and has advertisement where as the older version contains text and imagery in black and white. The modern version also contains advertisement from Michelin and the top which ingages viewers.

Printing press
Printing press is a device that applies ink to a print medium such as paper or cloth . it is mainly used for text. The printing press was invented in the Holy Roman Empire by the German Johannes Gutenberg around 1440 , based on existing screw presses . guternberg , a goldsmith by profession , developed a complete printing system , which perfected the printing process through all of its stages by adapting existing technologies to the printing purposes , as well as making groundbreaking inventions of his own.
A digital newspaper is a digital version of a printed newspaper . Newspapers can be digitally published online or
as a digital copy on a digital device , such as a mobile phone or an E Ink reader.

(photo of an electronic paper)
Electronic papers are becoming more popular and are known mulinatioanly around the world. They are much more easer to access and to carry around because of the weight / its very light and its portable , you can download newspapers online or an app on your phone, tablet etc. Also electronic papers wont get wet and ruined by the rain , this makes it less fragile.

BBC News
The Sun
The Guardian
Msn news

Newspaper articles online are becoming more popular, newspaper websites are providing to be effiecent to produce and easier for their audience to view. This has the same effect as a newspaper based, however electronic papers has become more easier to use as people are using electronic devices such as smartphones and tablets to access the news, which appeals to peoples needs and lifestyles.

Audience needs & lifestyles
Before people used to read paper prints more often for example the mirror , the sun , the guardian , in physical form ; however nowadays people interact by the using the internet and reading the paper online :
Paper print newspapers are now becoming a much more niche interest because more and more people visit papers online . This screen shot shows that you can look up weather , travel , environment , videos . By watching videos online this makes the viewing feel more engaged and by interacting with the news feel more involved . Online gives the audience a lot more variety visually where as in a paper format the viewing would have to flick through all the pages to find a subject/ article that most interested them .
By subscribing online this allows use to read / downloads on your phone which is a more portable and accessable device wherever you go . Also when subscribing on line the newspapers give more deals and vouchers .

The metro newspaper has a specific audience and appeals to people on public transport on the move , they are different to other newspapers because the articles are much shorter due to the busyness of the peoples journeys.
This screen shot is the online version of the metro , they use larger graphics to grab the viewers attention .
as you can see by the image of the metro , the front page headline is bold and larger than the actual text its-self , this makes the audience red the headline . Compared to other newspapers such as the sun , there is no slang words , which makes the viewer fully understand what they are reading , while they are on the go.
The metro use small words and get straight to the point .
newspapers are less brought for example if there are four of you in a family and one person brought the sun , then all the four people would read it if they wanted rather than buying four copies.
There are other ways of looking at news for example , tv, newspapers , magazines, radio etc. different lifestyles , cultures, ages will have a different style of searching for news rather than just a newspaper.
In comparison from modern days to 1851 where newspapers were being published such as 'stars and stripes' weekly US armed forces and during 1851 where the New York Times was published in America (picture shown below). During this time this fitted audiences needs as rotary printing press was during 1846 and papers were popular during this time and the typewriter was invented during 1843 so publishing was a common thing during this time period. Theses newspapers contained news on topics such as buisness, technology, sport, education, weather and obituaries. Features include arts, movies, theature, dining & wine, home & garden, fashion & style.

The front page of the Dec. 29, 1946 Daily Express reporting the discovery during the Manhattan Project that atomic power could be harnessed to meet energy needs.
By the iconic imagery of 'Harry Styles' this is a suppliemnt you get in the sun newspper which is introduced to please a nieche audience, and create a much more diverse audience. From this imagery this will appeal to a young female demographic. By the black and white colour this stands out and create a clean a smart look.
Papers nowadays contain supplements which was introduced in the 80's/90's which attracts a wider target audience by containing a smaller magazine inside a wider targeted paper; such as the sun you get a small magazine called 'fabulous' which contains celebrity news, fashion, lifestyle, food recipes which is targeted towards a more female demographic in the 20's + . With the supplements this helps newspapers set out there website by different sections such as certain interest such as technology, travel, education , gardening as these things won't appeal to everybody however these niche interests will appeal to a wider demographic with the variety of news provided. Supplements not only help the newspaper to carve their niche but also help largely in revenue generation. Supplements become a fertile ground for generating good revenue through advertisements as single newspaper can't only advertise and classifieds.
There are various supplements allowing a newspaper to engage their audience in a better way. For instance Times of India. It has got into niche segments of business, education, health and fitness, property and page 3 gossip. These supplements provide a plethora of information on various topics and sub-topics. It is a medium which engages and which is used to efficiently attract and deliver the customers requirements. Supplements also make papers popular and friendly to the target audience who they are trying to attract as this is also a way of promotional strategy by containing a free magazine inside, which can appeal to the whole family rather than the main paper e.g. the sun which may only appeal to the parents, however with the supplements this may be appealing towards a teenager and the information provided contains fashion and celebrity gossip.
Newspapers such as the metro earn there their money by advertisement, as they give there paper away free at train startions and other public places, they also allow there newspaper free online, as the adcertisement that is published on the website. Technology is becoming a much more part of peoples needs and lifestyle as people nowadays are reading newspapers on tablets and smartphones to access the internet and use apps on smartphones and tablets, this fits in with peoples needs and lifestyle as this give you the freedom to take a newspaper wherever they go but without in a paper format, which makes it more accessible for people.

These two clips show the difference at the opening scene
The opening section shows tones and the lighting of the shots are dark and gloomy, almost like a rain affect; which doesn’t create a pleasant atmosphere and shows there is no glamour by the mise-en-scence, there are shots of factories and rooftops with smoke coming from them , this shows that its a urban and based in rural surroundings . Furthermore the setting shows that it isn’t a very nice place to live and that the location maybe rundown or not well looked after. Towards the end of the clip there is a dog that is isolated which could represent the area or relate back to the point that it isn’t a very nice place , and that the neighbourhood doesn't look out for one another . There is no use of affects or CGI in this clip which could be due to the technology then wasn’t as popular / they didn’t have the equipment or the budget of the show , wasn’t as popular at that time .
Straight away in this clip we automatically feel a massive change between the first opening and in this one. Firstly there are technology changes such as use of CGI , in the first clip there wasn’t use of any affects , also there are much more brighter colours in this clip which creates a warm and more appealing feel to the surroundings , location . In the first clip towards the end there was a dog that was isolated and looked lonely; but in this clip there are pigeons which are in two which creates a friendlier atmosphere and could represent the community sticking together. This clip shows a city – such as London because of the people walking in groups, taxis, people sitting with there babies in a public place , and the flowers which also show that it’s a nicer place to live and creates a warmer feeling to the audience .
E20 is a internet spin off from the soap Eastenders, this is aimed towards a demographic audience of teenagers. The show aired as part of Eastenders 25th anniversary which was to develop new and young actors, writers, and composers etc. By having the access of watching this on the internet this attracts it primary target audience of teenagers as this type of media is popular with this age group. These episodes are between 3-16 minutes in length are available on the eastenders website and they are also available on the BBC iplayer, on the red button and aired on BBC three.
Multinationalism in soaps prezi -
Soap ownership
Soaps on the BBC such as eastenders are funded by our tv license , when we pay for our television license the perecentage goes to the BBC , as there is no advertisment the BBC get there money from us. The BBC are more restricted to show certain things , they are a sensorship meaning that they cant show anything .
ITV
The company ITV and there channels get the money from advertisement , the ITV has a smaller target market , and by having adverts they can attract there demographic cleverly e.g. if alot of males watch the show they can keep the viewers interested by advetising cars , football etc.
In this 1960 episode of Coronation Street the lighting is low-key as there are dark shadows/ tones as it is filmed in black and white. This creates no glamour within the mis-en-scene, with the tone of lighting of the black and white which doesns't create a pleasent atmosphere. There are closely packed houses. In the episode from the 1960's there was no silence , there was always noise but where as in the 2013 episode there is silence to build tension and to get us interested in what's going to happen next . In the newest episdoe in the 2013 there is a lot of changes that wasn't in the other two clips such as :
C.G.I
Intro shows sunset to create a carm
and a pleasent atmosphere
Truer colour pallet represented to
show brightness and nicer place
fade in and affects
and start
longer theme tune
low angles and alot more close
ups
Although in the clip from the
1960's we dont get any close up we know the main character by the screen timing
, they will get more time on a set . In the mordern clip there is a lot more head room in
a close up but this affect showed that a certain charcter was more weaker
and smaller compared to the other character who was bigger and stronger ; this
clip also seemed very filmed like becuase of the long takes .
In the 1979 episode it is dull and
grim , grey and bluey colours , the house are packed closely together again like
the first episode . It feels like a rundown rurring almost like regional rabbit
huts enviroment ; and living in poverty . The cat creates a lonely status , also
the tiles show rundown , looks like its been raining and cold and there is no
escape . There is a tree in the foreground which is a metaphore to show the
people rising out of poverty and that something grow there , there is some life
. The houses are brown , musty decated walls .
As we move on in the scences there starts to be some very slow tracking shots , and silence to show tension and builds suspence , he shouldnt be there and his body languages shows thats not his house ; the way he throws the book on the floor in anger and him creeping through the rooms . The characters are stereo typical dressed (the old man ) to show weak and that he is vunerable . The other character lights a ciggerate to show his cooler and powerful than the old man in his own home . The furniture doesnt match is is old fashioned compared to nowere days .

In this episode the colour pallet is alot more brighter which creates a more happier mood/ environment. The costumes worn by the characters are more casual, certain costumes are worn such as appron which shows the characters working title of working in a cafe. There are alot more shot sizes and camera movements used in this clip such as:
close-up
medium shot
tracking shots
over the shouler shot
hand held movement
