Discuss the effect of representation in media products on target audience/consumers

In this clip the woman are represented as working class, they are white woman ; they are older woman middle aged and beyond . The regionally is North of England "Manchester" . In this clip the woman are represented from a mans part of view "Gossiping" , this is stereotypical because not all woman gossip , if this was in todays time it was be sexes to judge all woman as this , but back then it was normal behaviour . The issue in this clip is that the woman is married to the man that she is living with; early eras the typical issue was a man and a woman living together but wasnt married if this was the issue there would be gossip ; but if you compare it to nowadays this is normal behaviour . The woman sitting down in the opening scence is being represented as small , everybody that is standing up in this scence is to be shown that they are against the woman sitting down .

In this clip you question the gender roles becuase the woman is doing everything for the man ; he is being represented as lazy and not a very good husband .In this clip its almost womans status vs mens status particulary society dominated by men. The woman in this clip is represented as the more male role ; but she doesnt let the man do anything for himself and the wife is in control of everything ; she is almost like a slave / servant to him and he is almost like a king the way he demards her. This would of been aimed for an older demographic audince , to relate to a married lifestyle and to the specific characters . The man is almost like a child the way he has been represented , such as that he spilt tomatoe sauce down him and the way his wife is doing everything for him . The family in this the first scence could be considered as a representation of a pooer wealth , such as he only has one shirt and that she is going to get some more at the market . However the mans behaviour is being represented as a 'king' and he is ruling his wife who is the 'slave' .
By his clothing it shows that the man has got a promotion on his job , which shows that the family are getting a bigger salary .

In this clip the issue / story line is rape , this is a big issue in the papers and around the world . Which shows that it is a Verisimilitude storyline . This story could represent that the world and people in it are not all nice and there are negatives.  It could also represent that the character isnt a nice person .
Cultures- homosexual - whole scence with no white people in / changed in ethnic society over the years , stereo typicial view on how asian family would react to homesexuiality . If you compare soaps to the older days you wouldnt of had issues/storylines like this and not related to different culture . This is also a issue such as in soap like "Eastenders" (Syed & Christian) . In Eastenders the character in that story line did'nt agree with his sexulity either becuase he was also a muslim and he told his family after the married to his wife . However we was still interested in the story unraveling to find out the other character reaction and it had a impact on the audience ; and hopefully something other people can relate to with in different cultures. Compared to the other eposides this clip is more morden and shows there wealth by their clothing and the wine they are drinking , which also creates a serphisticated , and andult enviroment / get together .

This stoty line is a homosexual relationships , this could be represented as stereo typical that gay men like things to be clean and tidy . We are actively involed in this becuase we are thinking about the video and questioning ourselves. he uses the word 'queen' , which shows drama queen and connotes that he likes to be clean and his homosexual.  Extremly camp characters ; is stereotypical represented - the programme is trying to entertain us by feeding the character , by giving the audience what they ask for .No shame - nowadays there is no same what sexuality you are , people are much more open now, in the clip the family backing him up about his homosexuality , differental , non undertebable sexuality .
In coronation street they use juxtaposition - this means that they place together to comparrision with two characters of the same personality , gender , age etc. In this case it would be the two homosexual men , one in which is really camp, high pitch voice etc , and the other is posh , doesnt come across as gay ; the complete oposite as the other man . This could represent that not all gay men are the same and can act , look differently . The scence where he is holding the giant teddy bear could represent his personality , and that he is soft / kind person and stereo typcial portrayed .

There is now a more diverse culture and a range of race and ethnicity represented in TV shows and drama, this is evident within the characters, themes, story lines but also in terms of attitudes, the contemporary writers must conciser ethical issues and integrate and explore them within the programme narratives. This reflects the demographic audience/ spectators who are also within a diverse culture which appeals to them with the story lines and issues that are currently happening.

The character Syed has been represented as a homosexual British Pakistani. The soap storyline clashes with the two cultures/ religion of living Britishly and as his religion of muslim, his culture has expectations to live up to as he is expected to live a marriage life with a woman. The storyline was represented with his feelings torned between his feelings and his faith. The storyline is said to be controversial, as homosexuality is strictly forbidden in Islam. As part of an English culture we have more freedom to marry who we want as our culture. this story line is an example of a contemporary issue related to culture and values being explored by the programme writters. you would not find this in a 60s episode soap because at that time there wasn't a culture diversity and not a  issue. The character Syed hasn't been represented in a stereotypical way of becoming a homosexual.

The sun is bold , cheap . The fonts are formal easy basic text , they use slang languages , 'GOTCHA' in headline colours - looks unprofessional-monochrome colours only two red & black , there are jagged text . the words "gotcha" is almost like a game against Argentia , its an heroic story , next to sunk - Argi - they dont even write there full country name. Where it saids our lads it connotes its us , our country together . The english showm in positive way & Argentia shown in negative way . Bias . This story is the fulklings war. There is one main story on the front of this newspaper; which takes up the whole front page . The major change i can see within the newspapers is if you compare this front page to 'The Times & 'Metro' there is only one article on the front , and the other two papers have more . In this paper  there is one bigger picture next to the article and there is small images one next to the words "the sun" and underneath the lead. This newspaper represents 'England' and our navy in a positive way, the words 'our lads' suggests a proud feeling. The words 'The navy had the Argies on their knees last night' suggest that they are weak and we are much more stronger and powerful than they are. Argentina are being represented in a negative way.

The paper looks elegant with the emblem. The emblem connotes of royalty, class and English culture. However in contrast to this the front page article was taken place in Australia. This shows that it is a multi cultured newspaper. Looking at the stories that they show and the way they are represented it makes it look formal and as if its targeted at upper/business class people. These could be either male or female and are around 30-40. This is just a guess by looking at the papers format.
The priminister 'Francois Fillon' has bad body language, as if he is asking for Britain's help .  He doesn't look happy about the situation and is negatively asking for our help. You could say they he has been represented as laid back and as if things are going to get done for him just because he is priminister. Furthermore moving onto the image of the boy he has a higher importance / status over the priminister as his photo is larger  and more eye catching but also this is breaking the stereotype of a youth. Society's negative stereotype of teenagers is causing more trouble in our country because they feel they need to live up to expectations and as a whole our society doesn't care about them. however he has been seen as heroric because he risked his life to save his brother . His father 'John Tyson' was heartbroken but proud of his son. There was a tribute page page for Jordan that has been liked by more than 40,000 people and his strong reverberated around the world via online news sites and micro-blogging sites such as Twitter. Furthermore this sets a positive representation on teenagers and young kids.

The metro is free and so it is appealing to everyone. You can find it on public transport such as train stations and buses. This is because it is free and so to reach a wide audience they need spread it so lots of people read it. The metro make all their money off of advertising. Company's pay for their product of service to be advertise as a small poster or part of a page for a certain amount of money.

The metro is cheap, looks more educational compared to the sun, no gutters , doesnt look elegant , free paper , mixture of hard & soft news , more stories , self contained , short text / quick for people to read on trains . Bolt shows determination in a good way , to beat his record , Madonna shown in positive way - better life for the children . pregnant woman - has no picture . "Another jackson tribute?" this sounds like  sarcasim and shows negative representation towards La Toya and Peter Andre .

Article

The representation in The Sun paper has an effect on social groups as a passive reader. There is no mention of race or ethnicity in the headline although this is a focus of the story. The photos of the accused men make their ethnicity obvious and this is likely to provoke a reaction or judgement in the reader. The use of language such as 'paedo gang' is strong and derogatory and will evoke strong feelings in the reader especially those with children. We have seen with the murder of an English soldier by so-called extremists how media stories can provoke strong reactions and copycat violence. A number of mosques were attacked as the story ran as anti-muslim groups and individuals showed their anger towards the Muslim community. There is the danger that a stereotype is created and all members of the Muslim community are demonised and become targeted because of the actions of the few.
There have been a string of high profile child abuse and child trafficking cases all featuring men from Asian backgrounds which has created a negative image and stereotype of this ethnic group. There is clearly a collision of values and attitudes between the British public and the Pakistani accused.

As a demographic group we suggest that negative issues have taken place and reflects negative role models within the media and society regarding this specific ethnic group. This is likely to heighten tension between the different social groups that already exists. This paper suggests a stereotypical group of men, due to their culture which has been represented badly in the past. The story reflects a violence act against British children and cultural conflict. Media theory suggests that passive consumers will respond in a reactionary, aggressive way and may not be in possession of all the facts or may not have read a range of media articles and views. We could stereotype the Sun readership as working class Men (mostly) with well defined psychographic tastes and values such as the notion of Britishness being defined by the white working class. Headline stories such as this one may concrete their biased views. The readership of the paper may be effected by content such as this which reflects the values already held by the readership. Long-term readers have expectation of the type of views and opinions projected by The Sun and this is part of the pleasure and gratification experienced by readers. The Sun has the widest reading of any UK paper and plays directly to its readership. This can be described as a mass readership.
Television content also affects viewing figures as the public are likely to respond to inflammatory content by choosing to watch it or not. An example of this is the baby swap Eastenders story which provoked complaints to the BBC and regulator (OFCOM) and caused some viewers to stop watching those episodes. Once that story had finished they are likely to have returned to watching the soap although some may have chosen not to watch again. This shows that producers and writers need to consider how they deal with serious social issues which can hit a nerve with audiences and provoke strong reactions.
If consumers are actively critical of the news and stories presented to them and understand how the media works and that stories can be presented from a biased perspective through language, images and perspective then those individuals are less likely to behave in a reactionary way. The hypodermic needle model suggests that ideas are injected from the media directly into the minds of the viewer but this depends upon the individual and their intelligence and critical skills. It is a model that assumes consumers are easily influenced and lack critical faculties. In a story like this one that repeats the ethnicity and religion of the accused there is a danger that it will affect how readers view these people in society.

The shot of Jean wearing boots and a dressing gown in the stairs could show shes upset by her expression and body language , that shes leaning against the wall . The opening scenes are set in there houses which shows its the morning  also there is a tracking shot of a sandwich . In this clip 'Micheal and 'Janine' are wearing black which connotes they are evil "the villains" in this soap.

http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/showbiz/tv/soaps/3332713/Baby-swap-plot-doesnt-hurt-EastEnders-ratings.html

The representation of a ‘baby mix-up storyline’ has brought an emotional influence and impact on individuals which has been explored in a episode of eastenders .

From this article this shows that there are issues with the storyline and that t here were a massive 3,400 complaints about the issue of this particular story, and that it is a emotional and psychological effect. This kind of issue may had this reaction because mothers will feel like victims. However in this article it does say that they provided help lines and that they did warn the fans about the plot . However due to this story line the viewing of this issue has raised the ratings up to a staggering 10.7 million .
Due to the negative effect on the public, it also has a huge impact on the characters and due to this Samantha Womack aka ‘Ronnie Mitchell’ decided to leave the soap.
In conclusion the representation of the BBC has fallen by negative press , however eastenders  ratings has risen and is positive for the soap.
In order to show the effect of representation in media products on target audiences/consumers i am going to talk about the indiviudal people, social groups, issues, places and the steroypes.

Hollyoaks: Scarlet Bowman says the Esther and Maddie bullying storyline has helped fans.
November 10th, 2012 by Anna Howell.
http://primetime.unrealitytv.co.uk/hollyoaks-scarlet-bowman-says-the-esther-and-maddie-bullying-storyline-has-helped-fans/
From this headline this shows the effects and theoretical models of audience behavior in a positive way. Hollyoaks has helped fans overcome bullying , Hollyoaks actress, Scarlett Bowman, has revealed that viewers have responded really well to her current bullying storyline, and have even been reaching out to her to share their own experiences. The subject was so well received that Hollyoaks even launched its own online anti bullying initiative to help tackle the issue which is set to take place on screen. This is a positive representation on the show and gives interaction between the young viewers and the show.
The effect of this storyline has been successful that the soap has made an online campaign to stop the issue of bullying and to help young people going through this.

On this paper 'youth' are being represented as vulnerable, in danger and innocent as this teenage girl who is 16 got killed on the way to school. This also sets a bad representation on Britian with the rates of knife crime. The attacker of this murder creates a negative effective to the readers as they will read this feeling sympathy for the victim and her family.

Copycat Violence:
Copycat violence is when a person who mimics a previous crime that they have seen through the media or described in fiction.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/crime/9180872/Coronation-St-copycat-killer-locked-up-for-16-years-over-hammer-attack-on-mother.html

This is an example from the Telegraph where a teenager has used copycat violence by mimicking a  violence act from seeing scenes from Coronation Street. He was found guilty for attacking/ killing his mother  with a weapon of a hammer by echoing the storyline from the soap.

Hypodermic needle theory (copycat):
Hypodermic needle theory is ideas that the media injects; put ideas into the speculator and can influence  his/her thinking and behaviour.
Positions the spectator as passive and weak-minded (easily led).
These types of theories have an effect of audience behaviour and can influence on how they interpret news. These have a negative effect with the media and the consumers and has potential violence that could harm and put people at risk.

An example of Hypodermic needle was the 1938 broadcast of the War of the Worlds and the subsequence reaction of its mass American audience. The War of the Worlds was a radio Drama that informed listeners that there was an alien invasion was currently in process in 1938, in which this  spread world wide and listeners of the radio show started to believe this was true which they reacted by panicking and built an atmosphere of  anxiety and tension.
This made people panic across the North East of America and making people flee their homes.  It is sometimes said the news of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour was received with skepticism by the American public, as a consequence of the radio performance. In the 1943 film Air Force, when the attack is reported on the radio a character asks if they have Orson Welles tuned in.

The Hypodermic needle theory is used broadly across all media such as in films and magazines  where characters/ people are being portrayed in a certain way i.e. mainstream celebrities are being airbrushed to look a certain way (better looking than they do in real life). This injects a message across to the consumers and to the majority of teenagers and the public minds and we think that we have to look a certain way in order to replicate that certain judgement/ the stereo typical characteristics e.g. a hero in a film must be muscular, good looking and brave.  Furthermore this could have an effect on the audience across the media which influences the way we perceive information.

It is important to understand that different spectators will read and understand visual, print and audio texts in different ways dependent upon their age, gender, experience, values and opinions. It also makes a difference whether the spectator has developed critical faculties and is able to decode and make a reading (not the preferred meaning). All media products, such as a film or newspaper article will usually  relate a message or a set of values depending upon their position and view point. Messages in mainstream media tend to be overt and this can be understood by most consumers whereas concealed (hidden) meanings will only be understood by some consumers. Media effects theory looks at the relationship between media text and consumer.
